Insights and Reflections #6: Low Pressure Area

      Today I learned that  low-pressure area is a region where the atmospheric pressure at sea level is lower than that of surrounding locations.Low-pressure systems form under areas of wind divergence which occur in upper levels of the troposphere. The formation process of a low-pressure area is known as cyclogenesis
              I will apply my learning about this phenomenon to my daily life,and to other weather related topics and lessons.
       Learning about this phenomenon is important because it is a hint or warning for us that a typhoon may occur in certain places.
      On a larger scale, I will share my learnings about this phenomenon to others for them to be knowledgeable about it and what it can lead to. And for them to be aware about its effects.
       I need to know more about low-pressure are, its effects and how we can relate this to our daily life.

Insights and Reflections #5: El Niño

              Today I learned that El Niño is defined by prolonged differences in Pacific Ocean Sea surface temperatures when compared with the average value. The accepted definition is a warming or cooling of at least 0.5 °C (0.9 °F) averaged over the east-central tropical Pacific Ocean. Typically, this anomaly happens at irregular intervals of 3–7 years and lasts nine months to two years.
       I will apply my learning about El Niño in my everyday living for me to become aware about what is happening around me.
          Learning about this phenomenon is important because if ever this will occur and we know what it is, we can easily overcome and be prepared about this.
         On a larger scale, I will share my learning about this phenomenon to others because I want them to be knowledgeable about El Niño and its effects to us.
          I need to know more about El Niño because it is one of the phenomenon that may caused drastic effects to us and our environment.

Insights and Reflections #4: La Niña

Today I learned that La Niña is a coupled ocean-atmosphere phenomenon that is the counterpart of El Niño as part of the broader El Niño-Southern Oscillation climate pattern. During a period of La Niña, the sea surface temperature across the equatorial Eastern Central Pacific Ocean  will be lower than normal by 3–5 °C.The name La Niña originates from Spanish, meaning "the girl," analogous to El Niño meaning "the boy."
          I will apply my learning about  La Niña in my everyday living for me to become aware and responsible about my actions .
         Learning about this phenomenon is important because if we know what are the effects of this phenomenon we can be able to prepare ourselves in such situations like this.
        On a larger scale, I will share my learning about this phenomenon to others because I want them to be knowledgeable about La Niña. And I also want them to be ready when something bad happens that is caused by or related to this phenomenon.
       I need to know more about La Niña and its effects because this is one of the phenomenons that will surely affect us and our daily activities.

07/16-22/2012 Low Carbon Diet Journal Entry #7

         A very cold weekend!!!As usual I do the activities I do to help mother earth and to help lessen the carbon dioxide emission in the atmosphere.

  • I throw my garbages to proper places;
  • I unplug all the appliances that are not in used;and
  • I lessen the used of the television and other appliances.
        And before I sleep, I made sure that I unplug the appliances that are not in used and I turn off all the lights. These practices are very simple but it can surely help.

       This week I do the usual things I do to save Mother Earth...

  • I helped my mother in cleaning our house and surroundings;

07/02-08/2012 Low Carbon Diet Journal Entry #5

           A very happy weekend! Saturday, I spent my whole day in my classmate's house, working with our project. Me and my classmates walked in going to my classmate's house. We also walked when we are going to another place. Walking is a very simple thing that can help lessen global warming. By doing these we can help Mother Earth.
     This week I also made other things that can help lessen the carbon dioxide emission in the atmosphere.

  • I lessen the used of the television and other appliances;
  • I used glass while brushing my teeth; and
  • I clean our house and backyard.
    Before I go to sleep, I made sure that I unplug all the appliances that are not in use.

06/25 - 07/25/2012 Low Carbon Diet Journal Entry #4

     The weather this week was very unpredictable. In the morning it will rain, the in the afternoon it will be very sunny. Sometimes, it was very sunny in the morning and in the afternoon, it will rain so hard. This is because o climate change..
     This week I can say that I have help lessen the carbon dioxide emission in the atmosphere. I do simple things such as;

  • using glass while brushing my teeth;
  • doing assignments instead of watching television to conserve electricity;
  • unplugging the appliances that are not in use;and
  • before going to sleep, I turned off all the lights.

Insights and Reflections: Tropical Depression

      Today I learned that a tropical depression is an organized system of clouds and thunderstorms with a defined, closed surface circulation and maximum sustained winds of less than 34 knots (39 mph). It has no eye and does not typically have the organization or the spiral shape of more powerful storms. However, it is already a low-pressure system, hence the name "depression". The practice of the Philippines is to name tropical depressions from their own naming convention when the depressions are within the Philippines' area of responsibility.
       I will apply my learning about this phenomenon in my daily living and to other lessons related to this.
        Learning about this phenomenon is important because it may cause drastic events that may affect our living and our community. It is also important to learn tropical depression for us to understand why this occurs and to be fully aware in case this may occur.
    On a larger scale, I will share my learning about this phenomenon to others because I want them to know what a tropical depression is. I also want them to be ready and aware about the effects of this phenomenon.
      I want to know more about the effects of tropical depression, its causes and how we can be more ready if this may happen and also other weather related ideas.

Insights and Reflections: Monsoon

            Today I learned that monsoon is a wind system that influences large climate regions and reverses direction seasonally. The word monsoon is derived from the Arabic word "mausim" which means season. It is traditionally defined as seasonal reversing and accompanied by corresponding changes in precipitation.
         I will apply my learning about monsoon in my daily life, so that I am aware about the effects it may done in our weather.
         Learning about this phenomenon is important because monsoon is related to our weather. And it can affect our daily life so it is better if we know what is monsoon.
        On a larger scale, I will share my learning about this phenomenon to others, because I want them to know what is monsoon and how it can affect our weather. So that they are aware and prepare about this phenomenon.
         I need to know more about monsoon and other weather-related ideas so that I am oriented and updated for what will happen to our weather and how it can affect our environment.

Insights and Reflections #1: Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ)

Global belts on high and low pressure, and the major prevailing winds on Earth

          Today,  I learned that Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is the area encircling the Earth near the equator where winds originating in the northern and southern hemispheres come together. It is known by sailors as the doldrums. The ITCZ appears as a band of clouds, usually thunderstorms that circle the globe near the equator.
         I will apply my learnings about this phenomenon to my everyday life. So that I am always aware in what may happen in the weather, specially the weather here in the Philippines.
         Learning about this phenomenon is important because ITCZ is one of the factors that may affect our weather. It may help us understand the other phenomenon  happening around us.
        On a larger scale, I will share my learnings about this phenomenon to others because, I want them to have knowledge about ITCZ and how it may affect our living. I also want them to be aware and to be prepared if this phenomenon may happen in real life. And for them to be always ready and prepared when this happen.
         I need to know more about the related topics and ideas about ITCZ, and other weather related ideas so that I can be aware of the happenings and the changes that happen in our weather and in our environment.
